How to Choose the Right Packing Materials

Choosing the right supplies depends on what you’re moving, how far you’re going, and how fragile your items are. Here are some general guidelines:

✔ Heavy items (books, tools, small appliances): Use small boxes to keep weight manageable and prevent box failure.

✔ Kitchen items (dishes, glasses, mugs): Dish boxes with dividers provide the best protection for breakables.

✔ Clothing: Wardrobe boxes with hanging bars let you transfer clothes directly from the closet — no folding, no wrinkles.

✔ TVs and electronics: Always use a properly sized TV box with bubble wrap for screen protection.

✔ Mattresses: A mattress bag keeps it clean during transport; a mattress box + shrink provides the most protection for long-distance moves.

✔ Artwork and mirrors: Picture/mirror boxes are sized to protect flat, fragile items — choose the right size to minimize movement inside the box.

Can I add packing materials to my moving quote?+
Yes — all packing materials can be added directly to your Poseidon Moving quote. Your moving consultant will help you determine what you need based on your inventory, and materials can be delivered on moving day or in advance so you can pack at your own pace.
What size box should I use for books and heavy items?+
Always use small boxes (16″ x 12″ x 12″) for heavy items like books, tools, and canned goods. Packing heavy items in large boxes makes them too heavy to lift safely and increases the risk of the bottom giving out. Keep each box under 50 lbs and reinforce the bottom with extra tape.
Do I need a mattress box or is a plastic bag enough?+
For local moves, a mattress plastic bag ($10) is usually sufficient — it keeps the mattress clean and protected from dust and moisture. For long-distance moves, a mattress box + shrink wrap ($50) provides significantly more protection against dents, tears, and compression during extended transit. If you want the most durable option, the reusable mattress carrier ($60) is built for repeated use.
