Moving Valuation & Coverage Options

Here’s something most people don’t realize until they’re deep into planning a move: being “licensed and insured” doesn’t mean your belongings are fully covered. That phrase refers to a moving company’s business liability — not protection for your household goods. The coverage that actually applies to your items during a move is called valuation.

Valuation is the level of liability a moving company assumes for lost or damaged items during transport. It’s required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for all interstate moves, and it’s something every customer should understand before signing a contract with any mover.

At Poseidon Moving, we believe in making this clear upfront — not buried in fine print. Whether you’re moving local or cross country, we’ll walk you through your options so you can make the right choice for your move and your peace of mind.

YOUR OPTIONS

Understanding Your Valuation Options

The FMCSA requires every interstate moving company to offer two levels of valuation coverage. Here’s what each one means in plain terms — and how to decide which is right for you.

Released Value Protection (Basic Coverage)
This is the standard level of coverage included in every move at no additional cost. Under Released Value, the moving company’s liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per item. That means if a 15-pound television worth $800 is damaged, you’d receive $9.00. It’s minimal, but it’s there by default. For customers booking a local move with mostly everyday items who want to keep costs down, Released Value may be enough — but it’s important to understand what it does and doesn’t cover. Use our moving cost calculator to see how coverage fits into your overall budget.

Full Value Protection (Recommended)
This is the highest level of protection available and the option we recommend for most moves. Under Full Value Protection, if an item is lost or damaged, the moving company is responsible for repairing it, replacing it, or reimbursing you at today’s replacement cost — whichever costs less. The minimum coverage is calculated at $6.00 per pound times the total weight of your shipment, with a floor of $6,000. Full Value Protection does come with an added cost, but for anyone moving furniture, electronics, or anything with real value, it’s a worthwhile investment. Pairing Full Value Protection with professional packing services gives you the strongest possible protection for your belongings.

Know the Difference: Valuation vs. Insurance
This is one of the most misunderstood parts of moving. Valuation is the mover’s liability — it’s part of your agreement with your moving company. Insurance is a completely separate policy you’d purchase from a third-party insurer. Many customers assume their belongings are “fully insured” just because their mover is licensed. They’re not. That’s why we take the time to explain your valuation options before we load a single box.

When Valuation Matters Most
Damage during a move is uncommon — especially with a professional crew — but it can happen. Whether it’s a residential move with family heirlooms and high-end furniture, or a commercial relocation with expensive electronics and office equipment, valuation gives you a safety net. We recommend being upfront about everything you’re moving during your free consultation so we can help you choose the right level of coverage.

HOW IT WORKS

How Valuation Works with Your Move

Getting the right coverage is a straightforward part of our moving process:

1.Consultation — During your booking or pre-move call, we’ll explain both coverage options and help you determine which level makes sense based on what you’re moving.
2.Select Your Coverage — Choose Released Value (included at no cost) or Full Value Protection (added to your move cost). If you go with Full Value, we’ll walk you through declaring any high-value items.
3.Confirm Before Moving Day — Your coverage is locked in before we arrive. No last-minute decisions, no pressure at the door. Everything is clear and documented ahead of time.
4.Inspect at Delivery — When we arrive at your destination, walk through your items with the crew. If anything needs attention, our team will guide you through next steps right there.

QUESTIONS

Valuation & Coverage Questions Answered

No — and this is one of the most common misconceptions in the moving industry. Insurance is a separate policy you purchase from a third-party insurance company. Valuation is the level of liability your moving company assumes for your belongings during transport. When a mover says they're "licensed and insured," that refers to their business coverage — not coverage for your household goods. Valuation is what actually protects your items, and it's built into your moving agreement.
It depends on what you're moving and how much risk you're comfortable with. Released Value costs nothing extra but only covers 60 cents per pound per item — meaning a damaged laptop worth $1,500 might only get you a few dollars back. Full Value Protection costs more upfront but covers repair, replacement, or reimbursement at today's value. If you're moving anything with real monetary or sentimental worth, Full Value Protection is almost always the smarter choice. Our team will help you figure out the right fit during your consultation.
The earlier the better. Valuation coverage should be confirmed before moving day — ideally during your booking or pre-move consultation. If you choose Full Value Protection, we'll walk you through declaring high-value items and making sure everything is accounted for before we load the truck. Waiting until the day of your move can limit your options, so we always recommend getting this settled early.

Yes. At Poseidon Moving, protecting your furniture is one of our highest priorities.

Every piece is carefully prepared before it’s moved. Our crews use heavy duty moving blankets, stretch wrap, floor protection, and proven loading techniques to help prevent scratches, dents, and shifting during transport.

If you have antiques, artwork, glass, marble, or other high-value items, we can recommend additional protection options such as custom crating or White Glove service.

Yes. For safety reasons, we cannot transport hazardous materials or certain restricted items. These are commonly referred to as “non-allowable items.”

This includes:

  • Propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid
  • Paint, aerosols, household cleaners, and other hazardous chemicals
  • Fireworks, ammunition, matches, and charcoal
  • Living things, including plants, fish, and pets

We recommend transporting these items yourself, using them before your move, or disposing of them safely according to local regulations.

Not sure about a specific item? Just ask your Move Coordinator before moving day, and we’ll be happy to let you know if it can be transported.

Yes. We can remove and reinstall many wall-mounted items as part of your move.

Our crews can typically dismount and reinstall:

  • Mounted TVs
  • Artwork and mirrors
  • Shelving
  • Window air conditioners

Some installations may require additional hardware, specialized tools, or extra time, so these services may incur an additional charge.

If you know you’ll need help with wall-mounted items, let your Move Coordinator know before moving day so we can arrive fully prepared.

Every move is unique, so the most accurate pricing starts with a personalized estimate.

  • Local Moves – Pricing depends on the size of your move, the time required, travel time, and any additional services such as packing, storage, or specialty handling. Based on your move, we’ll recommend either hourly or flat-rate pricing.
  • Long-Distance Moves – We provide binding estimates based on your inventory, the distance, logistics, and any additional services you request.

Yes. Every Poseidon Moving truck arrives fully stocked with the supplies and equipment your move may need.

  • Heavy-duty moving pads, stretch wrap, and tape
  • Dollies, hand trucks, straps, and floor protection
  • Basic tools for disassembly and reassembly

If you’re not fully packed by moving day, let us know before your move date and we’ll make sure the crew brings the packing supplies you need – boxes, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, bubble wrap, mirror boxes, and TV boxes.
