Here’s something most people don’t realize until they’re deep into planning a move: being “licensed and insured” doesn’t mean your belongings are fully covered. That phrase refers to a moving company’s business liability — not protection for your household goods. The coverage that actually applies to your items during a move is called valuation.

Valuation is the level of liability a moving company assumes for lost or damaged items during transport. It’s required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for all interstate moves, and it’s something every customer should understand before signing a contract with any mover.

The FMCSA requires every interstate moving company to offer two levels of valuation coverage. Here’s what each one means in plain terms — and how to decide which is right for you.

Released Value Protection (Basic Coverage)

This is the standard level of coverage included in every move at no additional cost. Under Released Value, the moving company’s liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per item. That means if a 15-pound television worth $800 is damaged, you’d receive $9.00. It’s minimal, but it’s there by default. For customers booking a local move with mostly everyday items who want to keep costs down, Released Value may be enough — but it’s important to understand what it does and doesn’t cover. Full Value Protection (Recommended)

This is the highest level of protection available and the option we recommend for most moves. Under Full Value Protection, if an item is lost or damaged, the moving company is responsible for repairing it, replacing it, or reimbursing you at today’s replacement cost — whichever costs less. The minimum coverage is calculated at $6.00 per pound times the total weight of your shipment, with a floor of $6,000. Full Value Protection does come with an added cost, but for anyone moving furniture, electronics, or anything with real value, it’s a worthwhile investment. Pairing Full Value Protection with professional packing services gives you the strongest possible protection for your belongings.

It depends on what you're moving and how much risk you're comfortable with. Released Value costs nothing extra but only covers 60 cents per pound per item — meaning a damaged laptop worth $1,500 might only get you a few dollars back. Will my furniture be protected?

Yes. At Poseidon Moving, protecting your furniture is one of our highest priorities.

Every piece is carefully prepared before it’s moved. Our crews use heavy duty moving blankets, stretch wrap, floor protection, and proven loading techniques to help prevent scratches, dents, and shifting during transport.

If you have antiques, artwork, glass, marble, or other high-value items, we can recommend additional protection options such as custom crating or White Glove service.

Are there items you can't move?

Yes. For safety reasons, we cannot transport hazardous materials or certain restricted items. These are commonly referred to as “non-allowable items.”

This includes:

•Propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid
•Paint, aerosols, household cleaners, and other hazardous chemicals
•Fireworks, ammunition, matches, and charcoal
•Living things, including plants, fish, and pets

We recommend transporting these items yourself, using them before your move, or disposing of them safely according to local regulations.

Can you take down TVs and wall-mounted items?

Yes. We can remove and reinstall many wall-mounted items as part of your move.

Our crews can typically dismount and reinstall:

✓Artwork and mirrors
✓Shelving
✓Window air conditioners

Some installations may require additional hardware, specialized tools, or extra time, so these services may incur an additional charge.

If you know you’ll need help with wall-mounted items, let your Move Coordinator know before moving day so we can arrive fully prepared.

How much will my move cost?

Every move is unique, so the most accurate pricing starts with a personalized estimate.

✓Local Moves – Pricing depends on the size of your move, the time required, travel time, and any additional services such as packing, storage, or specialty handling. Based on your move, we’ll recommend either hourly or flat-rate pricing.
✓Long-Distance Moves – We provide binding estimates based on your inventory, the distance, logistics, and any additional services you request.

Do you provide moving supplies and equipment?

Yes. Every Poseidon Moving truck arrives fully stocked with the supplies and equipment your move may need.

✓Heavy-duty moving pads, stretch wrap, and tape
✓Dollies, hand trucks, straps, and floor protection
✓Basic tools for disassembly and reassembly

If you’re not fully packed by moving day, let us know before your move date and we’ll make sure the crew brings the packing supplies you need – boxes, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, bubble wrap, mirror boxes, and TV boxes.
