LONG DISTANCE MOVING WITH POSEIDON MOVING

Chicago Long Distance Moving Experts

Poseidon Moving is a Chicago long distance moving company with the crews, equipment, and operational knowledge to relocate households and businesses from Chicago, Illinois to any state in the country. As licensed interstate movers, we carry active USDOT and MC credentials, full cargo insurance, and over two decades of experience managing the specific challenges that come with loading in a city built on a grid of one-way streets, permit-only zones, and buildings with their own rules.

Chicago moves come with variables that other cities don’t. Lake Shore Drive has commercial vehicle restrictions. Downtown loading docks book weeks ahead. Two-flat and three-flat stairwells in Wicker Park and Logan Square are tight enough to require furniture hoisting. Winter pickups mean salt, ice, and sub-zero wind chills that demand crew prep most companies skip. We’ve handled all of it — thousands of times — and the execution reflects it.

BEFORE YOU GO

What You Should Know Before Moving out of Chicago

Check Your Building’s Move-Out Requirements and Elevator Availability
High-rises along the lakefront and throughout the Loop typically require a service elevator reservation, a move-out application, and a refundable deposit. Many restrict moves to specific hours on weekdays. Confirm these details with your building management the moment you have a move date — elevator slots fill quickly, especially at the end of the month.

Reserve a Loading Zone or Temporary Parking Permit
Street parking in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, and most of the North Side is permit-only. Without a reserved loading zone or temporary permit, the truck may not be able to park close enough to your entrance, which adds carry distance and slows the crew down. The City of Chicago requires advance notice for temporary no-parking signage.

Plan Around Lake Shore Drive and Rush-Hour Truck Restrictions
Commercial vehicles are prohibited on Lake Shore Drive. If your building is on the lakefront, the truck needs to access via side streets, which affects timing and the staging plan. I-90/I-94 congestion during morning and evening rush can add over an hour to departure — scheduling the crew’s start time around these windows keeps the day on track.

Prepare for Two-Flat and Three-Flat Stairwell Access
Chicago’s iconic multi-unit buildings in neighborhoods like Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and Pilsen have narrow interior staircases and tight landings. Oversized furniture may need to be hoisted through windows or disassembled on-site. Flagging this during the estimate keeps the crew size and timeline accurate.

Account for Chicago’s Winter Conditions
Moving in January isn’t the same as moving in July. Snow-covered sidewalks, icy front steps, and wind chills that drop below zero affect crew safety and timing. We carry salt, floor runners, and protective wrapping for moisture — but building a buffer into your schedule during winter months avoids unnecessary pressure on the day.

PRICING

How Much Do Long Distance Movers in Chicago Cost?

The total depends on how large your home is, the distance to your destination, whether you add packing services, and the access situation at both ends. A one-bedroom going to Milwaukee or Indianapolis sits at the lower end. A four-bedroom heading to the East Coast or California will be at the upper range.

Chicago-specific factors — loading zone availability, stairwell carry distance, and building elevator schedules — are built into your estimate from the start. Every quote is a binding flat rate with fuel, tolls, and furniture disassembly included. Get your number through our online quote tool.

QUESTIONS

Chicago Long Distance Moving Questions Answered

Four to six weeks ahead for most departures. Summer is the busiest window in Chicagoland, especially around the end of the month when leases turn over across the North Side. If you’re moving between June and August, eight weeks gives you the best selection of dates and crew availability.
Yes. We serve the entire Chicagoland metro — Naperville, Evanston, Schaumburg, Oak Park, Arlington Heights, and everywhere in between. Suburban pickups often have easier truck access and longer driveways, which can actually speed up loading compared to a downtown high-rise.
Many Chicago high-rises and condo associations require advance scheduling, service elevator reservations, and proof of insurance before allowing a crew into the building. Your coordinator handles all of that — including the COI, the elevator booking, and any required deposits — so you don’t have to chase down management yourself.
Our crews operate year-round and are equipped for Chicago winters. We carry floor runners to protect against tracked-in snow and salt, use plastic wrap on upholstered items for moisture protection, and adjust scheduling when severe conditions make roads unsafe. If we need to push a pickup by a day due to a blizzard, we do it at no extra charge.
Federal law prohibits carriers from transporting hazardous materials — gasoline, propane, aerosols, ammunition, paint, fireworks, and pesticides. Perishable food, plants, and live animals are also excluded. Your coordinator provides a full list during the planning phase so you can make arrangements before pickup day.

Yes. At Poseidon Moving, protecting your furniture is one of our highest priorities.

Every piece is carefully prepared before it’s moved. Our crews use heavy duty moving blankets, stretch wrap, floor protection, and proven loading techniques to help prevent scratches, dents, and shifting during transport.

If you have antiques, artwork, glass, marble, or other high-value items, we can recommend additional protection options such as custom crating or White Glove service.

Yes. For safety reasons, we cannot transport hazardous materials or certain restricted items. These are commonly referred to as “non-allowable items.”

This includes:

  • Propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid
  • Paint, aerosols, household cleaners, and other hazardous chemicals
  • Fireworks, ammunition, matches, and charcoal
  • Living things, including plants, fish, and pets

We recommend transporting these items yourself, using them before your move, or disposing of them safely according to local regulations.

Not sure about a specific item? Just ask your Move Coordinator before moving day, and we’ll be happy to let you know if it can be transported.

Yes. We can remove and reinstall many wall-mounted items as part of your move.

Our crews can typically dismount and reinstall:

  • Mounted TVs
  • Artwork and mirrors
  • Shelving
  • Window air conditioners

Some installations may require additional hardware, specialized tools, or extra time, so these services may incur an additional charge.

If you know you’ll need help with wall-mounted items, let your Move Coordinator know before moving day so we can arrive fully prepared.

Every move is unique, so the most accurate pricing starts with a personalized estimate.

  • Local Moves – Pricing depends on the size of your move, the time required, travel time, and any additional services such as packing, storage, or specialty handling. Based on your move, we’ll recommend either hourly or flat-rate pricing.
  • Long-Distance Moves – We provide binding estimates based on your inventory, the distance, logistics, and any additional services you request.

Yes. Every Poseidon Moving truck arrives fully stocked with the supplies and equipment your move may need.

  • Heavy-duty moving pads, stretch wrap, and tape
  • Dollies, hand trucks, straps, and floor protection
  • Basic tools for disassembly and reassembly

If you’re not fully packed by moving day, let us know before your move date and we’ll make sure the crew brings the packing supplies you need – boxes, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, bubble wrap, mirror boxes, and TV boxes.
