What are my insurance options?
Everyoneβs belongings have value, whether monetary or sentimental, and no one wants anything to be damaged over the course of a move. We take great measures to insure our movers handle your household furnishings with care while protecting the properties where work is occurring. Unfortunately, damages or βcargo claimsβ are a part of the transportation industry, thus weβve created this email to address coverage options and exposures consumers face when hiring a moving company.
The common assumption is that full coverage is included when a moving company lists itself as a licensed and insured carrier.
The reality is, that is only a statement indicating the company has the sufficient auto, general liability, and cargo coverage that the DOT requires.
Most companies offer a 60Β’ per lb. limits of liability waiver for their standard rates packages. This is not full coverage or replacement insurance; however is the most standard coverage in the moving industry because no additional fees, descriptive inventory or value needs to be assigned to the shipment. Please take a moment to go through options offered by Poseidon Moving.
Basic Liability
1. $0.60 cents per pound per article
Also referred to as “basic carrier liability,” released valuation mandates that for anything lost or damaged during the move, the moving company must reimburse you at 60 cents per pound per article. This guarantees that the company is liable for lost or damaged goods, but in the end, doesn’t end up covering anywhere close to the actual value of the lost or damaged items. Most moving companies include the released valuation option in the base rate of a move at no additional cost to you.
Full Value Protection
2. Minimum Charge Starts at $6,000 Valuation
The standard amount of Full Value Protection is calculated by multiplying the estimated weight of your shipment by $6 per pound. For example, if the weight of your shipment is 4000 lbs, the amount of your valuation would be 4,000 multiplied by $6, which is equal to $24,000. Before we commence loading your shipment, you can always increase the amount of your valuation as well.
Full Value coverage, provides for repair, replacement or reimbursement (whichever is less) at todayβs replacement cost. No depreciation is applied. This coverage extends to pairs and sets. If Poseidon Moving cannot replace an exact duplicate to match the other item(s) in a pair or set, we will replace the pair or set and salvage rights may be exercised. vides for the repair or replacement of the item, whichever is less, to restore the piece to its condition immediately before the loss.
Coverage purchased as Full Value Protection must be purchased for a minimum $6.00 per pound or $6,000, whichever is greater, or the minimum required per the BOL for Full Value Protection coverage. Coverage requires that high value items (items valued over $2,000 or $100 times the weight of the item in lbs., whichever is greater) be specifically declared and valued, for the Full Value Protection to apply. Failure to purchase the coverage under this term may cause the shipment or any specific items to become underinsured and will limit the insurance to the lesser of liability at $100 per pound per Article or $2,000.
Full Value Protection items may require additional packing/crating services such. One of our team members will come out to your home to inspect those items and take down measurements for our carpentry team.
The settlement based on Full Value Protection insurance will be the lesser of repair costs, replacement value or as stated on the valued inventory. In the event that an item or its parts cannot be restored to its original condition through repair or replacement, subsequent loss of value is not covered beyond the repair or replacement cost of the item or its parts. Only repair costs are covered; incidental charges related to repair costs are not covered.
The Insurance carrier reserves the right to replace the damaged or missing items with items of like kind and quality. If any item of a “set” is lost or damaged, payment is only made for proportionate value of the item damaged, not the entire set. Items grouped together will be considered of equal value.
Exclusions:

If one item in a set is damaged, only that one item is covered, not the whole set.
Full Value Protection must be added prior to your move ( additional time may be needed if your items require custom crating).

3. $35.00 covers up to $20,000
This option meets most needs at a reasonable charge of $35. Transit Damage Protection limits Poseidon Moving Company, Inc.βs liability to the first $3,000 at Actual Cash Value for damage repair/replacement. For amounts in excess of $3,000, Poseidon Movings liability will be limited to $0.60 per pound per article. A transit endorsement typically covers damage that may occur on the road due to weather (such as a hurricane or flood) as well as other types of accidents or incidents, such as a road accident or fire, and grand theft auto of company truck.

Wrapping materials are designed to protect your furniture and larger household items during the move. This category includes heavy-duty moving pads to cushion furniture, tape to secure the pads, and shrink wrapβa plastic film that protects items like mattresses and couches from dirt and damage.
Packing materials, such as boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap, are used to securely encase and cushion smaller items and valuables. Please note that packing materials and services must be requested prior to your move date to ensure availability and preparation.
