Professional Interstate Movers You Can Trust

When your belongings cross state lines, the company handling that move is regulated by federal law. That’s not a technicality. It means the movers you hire must carry FMCSA authorization, an active DOT number, and proper cargo liability coverage to legally operate. Poseidon Moving meets every one of those requirements and has for over two decades of interstate relocations across the United States. We understand that behind every inventory list is someone’s life, their memories, and things that can’t be replaced. That’s never lost on us.

We hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and maintain consistent 5-star reviews across Google, Yelp, and every major platform .Our nationwide network allows us to coordinate pickup dates and delivery windows across all 48 contiguous states, based on route availability, seasonality, and service level. Every residential and commercial shipment is covered by full cargo insurance with optional full-value protection available at booking. When you hire Poseidon as your interstate moving company, you’re working with a licensed, insured, and accountable team from the first phone call through final delivery.

How Our Interstate Moving Process Works

A well-run interstate move follows a sequence that eliminates guesswork at every stage. Here’s how ours works from first contact to final placement:

Detailed inventory estimate: We conduct a virtual or in-person walkthrough of your home, cataloging every item, noting access conditions at both locations, and building a plan around your timeline. You receive a binding quote before any commitment.

Scheduling and pre-move coordination: Your dedicated move coordinator confirms dates, arranges access at both ends, sends you a detailed moving checklist, and stays in contact through every milestone leading up to move day.

Professional packing and loading: Our crew wraps, pads, crates, and loads your belongings using materials matched to the inventory and distance. Furniture is disassembled as needed and tagged for reassembly at delivery.

Tracked transport: Once the truck departs, you have visibility into its location and expected arrival. Your coordinator provides proactive updates rather than waiting for you to call.

Delivery, reassembly, and walkthrough: At your destination, we unload, unwrap, reassemble, and place every piece according to your instructions. A final walkthrough confirms everything arrived in the condition it left.

We ensure all your furniture is wrapped securely for maximum protection during the move. Items included:

  • Couches
  • Chairs
  • Mattresses
  • Bed frames
  • Dressers
  • Tables
  • Shelving units
  • Cabinets

We’ll disassemble your large furniture for safe transport and reassemble it upon arrival. Items include:

  • Bed frames
  • Tables
  • Armoires
  • China cabinets
  • Shelving units
  • Desks

To ensure maximum protection for your belongings, we provide five specialty moving boxes at no extra charge for fragile, valuable, or uniquely shaped items. These boxes must be pre-ordered before your move date to guarantee availability.

  • TV Box
  • Picture/Mirror Box
  • Wardrobe Box
  • Lamp Box
  • Mattress Box

Loading: Our team carefully loads your items, ensuring they are safely secured and properly strapped inside the truck to prevent any movement during transport.

Unloading: Upon delivery, we’ll unwrap your items, place them exactly where you want, and ensure everything is set up to your satisfaction.

All transportation costs are covered in your flat rate. This includes:

  • Fuel
  • Tolls
  • Travel Expenses

We include basic liability coverage to protect your items during the move. This ensures standard reimbursement for any damages incurred, following industry regulations.

How Much Does an Interstate Move Cost?

The cost of an interstate move depends on a combination of factors that are unique to your situation. No two moves are identical, which is why blanket pricing rarely reflects what you’ll actually pay. Here’s what drives the number:

Mileage: A 500-mile move between neighboring states costs less than a 2,500-mile coast-to-coast relocation. Distance is the baseline for every interstate estimate.

Inventory size: The total volume of your belongings determines the truck space required. A one-bedroom apartment generates a fraction of the cost of a four-bedroom house.

Service level: Load-and-deliver costs less than full-service packing and unpacking. Specialty handling for pianos, artwork, or fragile collections adds to the total as well.

Access complexity: Elevators, walk-ups, long carries, gated entries, and narrow streets all affect labor time and crew size.

Seasonality: May through September and end-of-month dates are peak periods. Moving during off-peak windows can reduce your cost noticeably.

As a general benchmark, interstate moves typically range from $2,500 to $10,000+. A 2 to 3 bedroom home moving 1,000 to 1,500 miles usually falls between $4,000 and $7,500. Poseidon provides flat-rate quotes so your price is locked before move day with no hidden fees or weight-based adjustments on delivery.

Most people don’t compare moving companies because they want to. They do it because they’ve heard stories about prices doubling on move day, belongings arriving late, or calls going unanswered after the truck leaves.

Those stories exist because some companies earn them. Ours don’t, and our reviews prove it.

How Interstate Moving Estimates Work

Not all moving quotes are created equal, and understanding the difference can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. There are three types of estimates in the interstate moving industry, and knowing which one you’re getting is critical before you sign anything.

Non-binding estimates are rough projections based on approximate weight or volume. The final charge can increase on delivery if your shipment weighs more than expected. This is common with brokered moves and weight-based pricing models, and it’s the reason so many customers experience surprise charges on move day.

Binding estimates eliminate surprises on both sides, which is why this is the type we prefer. No surprises from you, no surprises from us. Your price is based on the services and listed items in your agreement. Even if your shipment is heavier or takes up more space inside the truck, the price stays the same. This protects you from cost increases, as long as your itemized list of items being moved is precise.

Binding not-to-exceed estimates are often considered the gold standard for interstate moves. Like a binding estimate, your price is locked and won’t increase even if the shipment exceeds the original projection. But unlike a standard binding estimate, if the actual shipment comes in lighter than projected, you only pay for the actual cost. This means you could end up paying less than originally agreed upon. It’s the most transparent pricing model in the industry, and it puts the financial risk where it belongs: on the moving company, not on you.

Interstate Moving Service Levels

Not every interstate move requires the same level of service, and not every budget is the same. We offer multiple service tiers so you can choose the option that fits your timeline and financial needs without sacrificing the quality of your experience.

Dedicated Truck

Your belongings get exclusive use of the truck with direct routing to your destination. This option offers our fastest delivery window and no shared space.

Expedited Delivery

Priority scheduling with the tightest delivery window available for your route. Best for customers who need reduced delivery flexibility and faster scheduling.

Shared / Consolidated

Your shipment shares truck space with other customers heading in the same direction. It’s typically more affordable, with longer delivery windows and added flexibility.

Smart Moving

Our most budget-friendly option for small moves. Ideal for a few items, studios, and one-bedroom relocations with wide flexibility on pickup and delivery windows.

Packing Services for Interstate Moves

How your belongings are packed directly affects whether they survive a multi-state trip. Interstate moves involve more handling, longer transit times, and greater exposure to vibration and temperature changes than local relocations. Professional packing isn’t a luxury on these moves. It’s a safeguard.

Poseidon offers three levels of packing service to match your needs and budget:

Full-Service Packing

Our crew packs your entire home from top to bottom. Every drawer, closet, shelf, and cabinet. Includes all materials, labeling, furniture disassembly, and custom crating for fragile or high-value items. Best for customers who want a completely hands-off experience.

Partial Packing

You handle the straightforward items like clothes, books, and linens. We take care of the kitchen, glassware, electronics, and anything that requires professional wrapping or crating. A practical middle ground that saves money without sacrificing protection where it matters most.

Fragile-Only Packing

Focused exclusively on items with the highest breakage risk: china, crystal, artwork, mirrors, flat-screen TVs, and similar pieces. You pack the rest yourself and we ensure the most vulnerable items are protected to professional standards.

Liability note: Items you pack yourself are generally not covered under carrier liability for damage caused by packing quality. Items packed by our crew are fully covered under the valuation option you select. This is one of the most important reasons to consider professional packing for high-value or irreplaceable belongings.

Items we cannot transport: Federal regulations and safety standards prohibit interstate movers from transporting hazardous materials. This includes gasoline, propane tanks, aerosol cans, paint, ammunition, fireworks, pesticides, and perishable food. Your coordinator will provide a complete list during the planning phase so you can make arrangements before move day.

The best interstate movers don’t just move your things. They remove the uncertainty from the entire experience. You know the price. You know the timeline. You know who to call. And when the truck arrives, everything is exactly where it should be.

See how our moving process delivers that certainty on every job.

Interstate Moving Delivery Windows and Scheduling Flexibility

One of the biggest sources of stress during an interstate move is not knowing when your belongings will arrive. Delivery windows depend on distance, service type, and time of year. Here’s how to set realistic expectations and what flexibility options are available:

Neighboring states (under 500 miles): Typical delivery within 1 to 2 days from pickup.

Regional moves (500 to 1,500 miles): Delivery windows of 2 to 5 days, depending on route and truck availability.

Coast to coast (1,500+ miles): Expect 2 to 7 days for standard service. Dedicated truck options shorten this window significantly.

Date change flexibility: Life doesn’t always follow a schedule. If your move date needs to shift, contact your coordinator as early as possible. We accommodate changes without rebooking fees when notice is given in advance.

Storage-in-transit: If your new home isn’t ready on arrival, your shipment can go directly into secure storage and be delivered when you’re ready. No need to arrange separate storage on your own.

Peak season considerations: Summer months and the last week of every month are the highest-demand periods. Booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead during these windows gives you the widest date selection and most competitive pricing.

Why Choose Poseidon as Your Interstate Moving Company

There are thousands of companies advertising out of state moving services. Many of them are brokers who sell your job to the lowest-bidding carrier and disappear after you sign. Others are legitimate movers who simply don’t invest in the coordination, communication, and crew quality that a smooth interstate relocation demands. Here’s what sets Poseidon apart:

Flexible service levels with clear scheduling: Whether you need a dedicated truck, shared shipment, or priority delivery, we confirm your pickup date and estimated delivery window in writing at booking so you can plan with confidence.

Binding estimates with no move-day surprises: Your price is based on a detailed inventory of every item being moved. The number you agree to is the number you pay. Period.

One coordinator from start to finish: The person you speak with at booking is the same person managing your move through delivery. No call centers, no handoffs, no repeating yourself to a new rep every time you call.

A+ BBB rating and verified reviews: Our reputation is built on thousands of completed relocations with documented outcomes. We encourage every customer to leave a review because we trust what they’ll say.

COI and documentation support: Many buildings, HOAs, and property managers require a certificate of insurance before granting access. We issue COIs promptly so your move isn’t delayed by paperwork.

Nationwide reach with local-level care: We operate across all 48 contiguous states and bring the same attention to a 400-mile move that we bring to a 3,000-mile one.

An interstate move is a commitment of time, money, and trust. The right moving company earns all three before the truck shows up. Request a free interstate moving estimate and see how Poseidon handles that conversation.

What’s the difference between an interstate move and a long distance move?+
An interstate move specifically means crossing state lines, which triggers federal DOT regulation regardless of distance. A long distance move is a broader term that can include moves over 100 miles within the same state. All interstate moves are long distance, but not all long distance moves are interstate. The distinction matters because interstate moves require FMCSA-authorized carriers with federal operating authority.
How do I verify that a moving company is licensed for interstate moves?+
Ask for the company’s USDOT number and look it up on the FMCSA website (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov). The listing will show whether their operating authority is active, whether they carry the required insurance, and whether any complaints or safety violations have been filed. If a company can’t provide a DOT number or their authority shows as inactive, don’t hire them.
Can I change my move date after booking?+
Yes. We understand that timelines shift, especially during interstate relocations where housing closings, lease dates, and job start dates don’t always align. Contact your coordinator as early as possible and we’ll work to accommodate the change without rebooking fees. Flexibility is part of the service, not an exception to it.
What happens if something is damaged during an interstate move?+
Federal law requires interstate movers to offer two levels of liability coverage. Released value protection is included at no additional cost and covers items at $0.60 per pound per article. Full-value protection is available at an additional cost and requires the carrier to repair, replace, or reimburse the current market value of any item damaged during the move. We recommend full-value protection for any shipment containing high-value or irreplaceable items.
What items can’t be shipped on an interstate move?+
Federal regulations prohibit interstate carriers from transporting hazardous materials including gasoline, propane, aerosols, paint, ammunition, fireworks, and pesticides. Perishable food, plants, and live animals also cannot be loaded on the truck. Your coordinator provides a complete prohibited items list during the planning phase so you have time to make alternative arrangements.
How do I get a free interstate moving estimate?+
You can request an estimate through our website or by calling our team directly. We’ll schedule a virtual or in-person walkthrough of your home, review your inventory and timeline, and deliver a binding not-to-exceed quote, typically within 24 hours. There’s no cost, no obligation, and no pressure.
