Chicago moves are priced one of two ways: by the hour or at a flat rate. On hourly moves, stairs and carry distance drive the clock, so a third-floor walk-up loaded from the alley usually takes longer than a high-rise unit with a dock and freight elevator.

How do no-parking signs work for a Chicago move?

They’re the usual way to hold curb space on a busy block. Many ward offices give residents courtesy no-parking signs for move day, but those signs can’t be enforced, and posted street cleaning rules still apply. Enforceable signs, which allow ticketing or towing, come through the Chicago Department of Transportation and must be requested ahead of the move. We’ll suggest the right option for your block.

When is the busiest time to move in Chicago?

Demand peaks from May through September, and the first and last days of each month book up first. May 1 and October 1 have long been two of Chicago’s most popular moving days. For a summer or month-end date, book four to six weeks ahead. If your date is closer than that, our last-minute movers may still have a crew open.

Do you move in the winter?

Yes, year-round. Winter moves get extra runners for slush and road salt at every entrance. With short daylight hours, morning starts work best, and winter dates are usually easier to book than summer ones, so you’ll have more choice of day and arrival time.

Is moving out of a courtyard building different?

Usually it means a longer carry. In Chicago’s vintage courtyard buildings, the entry stairs open off the courtyard rather than the street, and most are walk-ups under four stories, so everything travels across the court and up or down a stairwell. We size the crew for that longer carry.

Will my furniture be protected?

Yes. At Poseidon Moving, protecting your furniture is one of our highest priorities.

Every piece is carefully prepared before it’s moved. Our crews use heavy duty moving blankets, stretch wrap, floor protection, and proven loading techniques to help prevent scratches, dents, and shifting during transport.

If you have antiques, artwork, glass, marble, or other high-value items, we can recommend additional protection options such as custom crating or White Glove service.

Are there items you can't move?

Yes. For safety reasons, we cannot transport hazardous materials or certain restricted items. These are commonly referred to as “non-allowable items.”

This includes:

•Propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid
•Paint, aerosols, household cleaners, and other hazardous chemicals
•Fireworks, ammunition, matches, and charcoal
•Living things, including plants, fish, and pets

We recommend transporting these items yourself, using them before your move, or disposing of them safely according to local regulations.

Can you take down TVs and wall-mounted items?

Yes. We can remove and reinstall many wall-mounted items as part of your move.

Our crews can typically dismount and reinstall:
